After a little bit of a hiatus, we’re returning with our
weekly review column, and in addition we’ve moved this to
every friday instead of every sunday as previously done.
This week we jump on 2 tracks released by an established
act in Olamide, and a hot name buzzing in the industry,
Seyi Shay. Both have had pretty good hits this year and we
shall review how these new singles from them shake up
with us.
Olamide – Yemi My Lover
Olamide yet again shows artistic depth and maturity on
‘Yemi My Lover’ lifted off his third studio album which is
slated to hit stores in weeks. After the massive success of
‘Durosoke’ and ‘Turn Up’; ‘Yemi My Lover’ is exactly
with the discography doctor prescribed, emotive, yet
groovy enough to high the fever caused by the anticipation
of the album.
Olamide soulfully tells the tale of a sour past lover over
stripped instrumentation driven by solely sythns, piano and
drums. This cut will put Olamide on track on his race to
legend-dom. With a title destined to raise eyebrows, the
infectious yet catchy chorus, fierce delivery, and back-up
vocals placed at the right spots drive the song home. Just
like Durosoke if treated by a seasoned live band, one will
be made to realize why the YBNL front-man is a
principality. To cut the long story short ‘Yemi My Lover’
affirms the fact that Olamide is a recording artiste not a
rapper.

Seyi Shay – Chairman ft. Kcee
Former Flytime Entertainment songbird Seyi Shay is in the
experimentation phase as she collaborates with Kcee on
‘Chairman’ produced by their go-to man ‘Del B’; Despite
the fact that if this number is given the proper push it might
fare well, ‘Chairman’ might be Seyi Shay’s weakest song
yet after ‘Ragga Ragga’.
Obviously inspired by Omawumi & Flavour’s ‘Bottom
Belle’; Seyi abandons her ‘Irawo’ and ‘No Lele’ skin as she
begs to be ‘sprayed’ money because she will make you
dance on a high-life beat baring similar base-line to Kcee’s
Limpopo. ‘Chairman’ which is born out of the pressure of
fitting in instead of standing out, is anything but original
and daring.
